University of Aberdeen, UK

Organizer: Dr. Naser Makarem, Assistant professor in University of Aberdeen

The workshop titled "Brexit and Audit Pricing," held on July 31, 2024, at the Sir Duncan Rice Library, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, was an exceptional success, attracting considerable attention from a diverse group of professionals across multiple fields. The event's wide-ranging appeal underscored its significance in addressing current issues at the intersection of economic policy and audit practices. A key highlight of the workshop was the presentation of a research paper, also titled "Brexit and Audit Pricing." This paper, which is currently under review for publication in the Accounting Review—an esteemed journal recognized as the most prestigious by the Chartered Association of Business Schools—provided profound insights into the impact of economic policy uncertainty on audit fees in the context of Brexit. The paper explored how the uncertainty surrounding Brexit has influenced audit pricing, shedding light on the broader implications for the financial and regulatory environment in the UK and beyond.

University of Murcia, Spain

Organizer: Dr. Javier Cifuentes-Faura, Researcher in University of Murcia

This workshop aims to explore the complex relationship between corruption and its impact on disaster management, using Turkey as a case study, with a specific focus on the 2023 earthquake. The session assessed the legal and institutional frameworks addressing corruption in Turkey, evaluating their effectiveness and enforcement challenges. By analyzing corruption trends during President Erdoğan's tenure, the workshop provided insights into how public perceptions and political practices have evolved. Key indicators such as the V-Dem Political Corruption Indicator, Impartial Administration Index, and Corruption Perception Index was utilized to highlight these shifts. The analysis showed a two-phase trajectory of Erdoğan's leadership, where early gains in combating corruption gave way to increased levels of cronyism and corrupt practices in public works tenders. Policy recommendations were presented, focusing on enhancing transparency, regulatory enforcement, and international collaboration in governance and disaster preparedness. Through this case, the workshop extended the discussion to the global level, underlining the importance of robust measures in national and international policy-making.

Northeastern University, USA

Organizer: Dr. Rick Arrowood, Lecturer in Northeastern University

This workshop aimed to explore the dual impact of AI on college students and faculty behaviors, with a particular focus on the legal and policy implications. As AI tools become more sophisticated, they assist students in writing assignments and help faculty with grading and administrative tasks. However, the convenience of AI-generated content raises significant concerns about maintaining academic honesty and upholding educational standards. Additionally, the extensive use of personal data by AI applications brings forth privacy issues that must be addressed within the legal frameworks of regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This workshop delved into policy-making aspects, examining how institutions and lawmakers can develop and implement regulations to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI in higher education. By investigating these issues, this research provided a comprehensive understanding of how AI can be integrated into academic environments in a manner that upholds legal standards and promotes ethical practices.
